Strategy
“AI for All”, the national AI strategy launched in June 2026, targets $200bn of added growth and 250,000 AI jobs. Budget 2025 gave $925.6M over five years for sovereign public AI compute.
Regulation
No AI Act. Bill C-36 (tabled June 2026) requires transparency on automated decisions and creates a digital safety and data protection commission. The Canadian AI Safety Institute gets $50M under the new strategy.
Compute
The AI Sovereign Compute Infrastructure Program opened in Apr 2026 to fund a public supercomputer, with about $890M over seven years.
Key labs
Mila, Vector Institute, Amii, Cohere, LawZero (Yoshua Bengio’s AI safety non-profit).
Notable models
Cohere Command A+ (May 2026): open weights under Apache 2.0, 48 languages.
What to watch
Whether Bill C-36 passes and the new regulator is set up; who wins the ~$890M supercomputer build; the Cohere–Aleph Alpha merger.
