Canada’s biggest news publishers sue Anthropic over Claude

Industry

Four of Canada’s largest news organisations, Postmedia, Torstar, The Globe and Mail and The Canadian Press, have sued Anthropic in an Ontario court, the Canadian Press reports. The claim was filed on 6 October 2026.

The publishers allege copyright infringement, unjust enrichment, breach of their websites’ terms of use and circumvention of technical protections. They say Anthropic scraped their sites to build its Claude AI models and keeps scraping them to answer users’ questions.

The same group sued OpenAI in 2024, and that case is unresolved. Anthropic had not commented at the time of reporting, and none of the allegations has been tested in court. In the US, Anthropic agreed a $1.5 billion settlement with book authors, which a judge approved in July.
