Gemini is Google’s AI assistant. It does what the other chat assistants do, and its advantage is how closely it connects to Google’s own services: it can work with your Gmail, Docs and Drive, and it draws on Google Search.
The free plan is broad, with image generation, Deep Research, the Gemini Live voice mode and Canvas for drafting. Google’s paid plans are bundled with extra cloud storage, starting with AI Plus at $4.99 a month, so if you already pay Google for storage, check what you already have. There are apps for phones, Mac and, since September 2026, Windows.
The privacy default matters here. Gemini saves your chats and uses them to improve Google’s services, including training, and some are read by human reviewers. To stop that, turn off Keep Activity in Gemini Apps Activity.
