Recent change On 18 Aug 2026 Microsoft began merging the consumer Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot apps into one app, removing Podcasts, Group Chat, Copilot Labs, the Mico character and consumer Deep Research. Copilot Pro was replaced by Microsoft 365 Premium, and support for existing subscribers ended 1 Aug 2026.
Microsoft Copilot is Microsoft’s AI assistant, built into Windows and Edge and, on paid plans, into Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. The free Copilot app works like any chat assistant. The real draw is AI inside the Office apps you may already use at work or home.
Microsoft reshaped Copilot in 2026. Copilot Pro was retired and replaced by Microsoft 365 Premium at $19.99 a month, and in August Microsoft began merging the consumer and business Copilot apps into one, removing several features such as Podcasts and consumer Deep Research along the way. For most people the practical question is simply which Microsoft 365 plan they have: Personal includes Copilot at higher limits than the free app; on Family, only the account owner gets the AI features.
Microsoft may use your conversations to train its models. You can opt out under your profile, Privacy, “Training on conversation activity”.

Free plan: Free Copilot chat has usage caps; Microsoft's pricing page says free users who hit the cap can upgrade or come back later. No exact numbers given.
