Best for

Professional developers who want an editor built around AI agents that can plan and make multi-file changes, with a choice of Grok, Composer, Claude, GPT and Gemini models.

Not great for

Developers tied to JetBrains, Xcode or Vim: Cursor is its own VS Code-based editor, and heavy use of third-party frontier models on Pro can exceed the included usage and lead to on-demand charges.

Recent change SpaceX acquired Cursor maker Anysphere for about $60B in stock (announced 21 Apr 2026, closed 14 Aug 2026); Cursor is now part of SpaceXAI. Grok models (4.5–4.7) and 'Grok Bot' are now first-party in Cursor plans, alongside the in-house Composer 2.5.

What it is

Cursor is a code editor built around AI. It is based on VS Code, so extensions and shortcuts carry over, and its agents can plan and make changes across many files at once. It offers its own Composer model alongside models from xAI, Anthropic, OpenAI and Google. SpaceX bought Cursor’s maker, Anysphere, in 2026.

It suits professional developers who want AI at the centre of how they work. The free Hobby plan has limited agent requests; Pro is $20 a month. Because Cursor is its own editor, it is less convenient if you are tied to JetBrains, Xcode or Vim, and heavy use of top third-party models on Pro can run past the included usage.

Privacy: Cursor says that with Privacy Mode on, your code is not used for training. Check that it is on under Cursor Settings, General.

Your data

Cursor's data-use page says that with Privacy Mode off it may store and use codebase data and prompts to train its models. With Privacy Mode on (Cursor Settings > General > Privacy Mode, enforced on Business/Teams), code isn't used for training and model providers are under zero-data-retention.
