Best for

Developers who want an agent that can handle multi-step tasks (features, bug fixes, tests, PRs) from the terminal, IDE, desktop app, web or phone.

Not great for

Anyone wanting a free tool or a choice of non-Claude models: it isn't in Claude's Free plan, and it only runs Anthropic's Claude models (directly or via Bedrock, Google Cloud or Microsoft Foundry).

What it is

Claude Code is Anthropic’s coding agent. Rather than suggesting lines as you type, you describe a task, such as a feature, a bug fix or a set of tests, and it reads your repository, edits files, runs commands and reports back. It runs in the terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains, in a desktop app, on the web and on phones.

It comes with Claude’s paid plans (Pro from $20 a month, and Max for heavier use) or can be paid for by usage through Anthropic’s API. It is not included in the free Claude plan, and it only runs Anthropic’s own Claude models.

It is best for developers comfortable handing a task to an agent and reviewing the result. On consumer plans, Anthropic uses Claude Code data for training only if the “help improve Claude” setting is on; Team, Enterprise and API use is not used for training.
