AI in Manufacturing

Camera inspection and maintenance alerts pay their way on the factory floor. Showing how much of a factory’s gains came from AI itself, rather than the wider overhaul around it, is harder.

Where AI works today

Visual quality inspection and predictive maintenance are the established uses: cameras catch defects on the line, and sensor data warns before a machine fails. Planning and scheduling tools, digital twins that simulate a factory before it is built, and robots that work alongside people come next. The World Economic Forum’s Global Lighthouse Network, which recognises factories for their use of AI and other advanced technology, reached 238 sites in June 2026.

Still unproven

Most headline results come from whole-factory overhauls, so it is hard to say how much is down to AI alone, and the Lighthouse figures are the sites’ own as published by the World Economic Forum. Safety certification for AI-driven robots is still being built: NVIDIA’s Halos programme for factory and warehouse robots was in early access when it launched in June 2026, and TÜV SÜD and Accenture presented their faster certification process in October 2026 as a concept, not a product.

Regulation

EU: the new Machinery Regulation applies from 20 January 2027. Under the AI Omnibus, AI built into machinery is expected to be handled through the Machinery Regulation rather than directly under the AI Act, with detailed AI safety requirements to follow in delegated acts. China: an “AI + manufacturing” action plan from eight government departments (January 2026) targets 100 high-quality industrial datasets and 500 typical AI use cases by 2027, and in October 2026 the industry ministry said it is drafting next-generation smart-manufacturing policies that include support for industrial AI agents.

What to watch

  1. The delegated acts that will set AI safety rules for machinery in the EU, ahead of 20 January 2027.
  2. China’s next-generation smart-manufacturing policies, and progress on its 2027 targets for industrial datasets and AI use cases.
  3. Whether AI safety certification for factory robots moves beyond early access and concepts.
  4. Whether Lighthouse reports start separating out what AI itself contributed.
