AI in Finance
Fraud screening and staff copilots are routine. Letting AI make lending calls or move customers’ money is where banks still hold back.

Where AI works today
Fraud and payment screening is the oldest and largest use: banks and card networks score transactions as they happen. The newer wave is staff copilots. JPMorgan says about 150,000 employees use its LLM Suite each week, and Morgan Stanley says almost all of its advisor teams use its internal assistant. Coding assistants, document search and customer-service chat follow.
Still unproven
Most productivity figures are the banks’ own, and JPMorgan’s time savings are estimated by its users. Turning those hours into profit is still hard to show. Autonomous agents are the open question: in October 2026 JPMorgan, Bank of America, Citi and Schwab all said outside AI agents cannot move customers’ money. Attackers use AI too: South Korean officials said signs point to AI agents in a wave of bank breaches that came to light on 30 September 2026.
Regulation
EU: credit scoring is a high-risk use under the AI Act. The AI Omnibus, published on 24 July 2026, moved those obligations from August 2026 to 2 December 2027. US: there is no AI-specific banking law. Federal model-risk guidance updated in April does not cover generative or agentic AI, and in October 2026 three US regulators, including the Federal Reserve, began questioning banks about advanced AI models. The Bank of England and the ECB are pressing banks to strengthen recovery plans.
