Chinese carmaker Chery says it will sign a strategic cooperation agreement with K2, a company based in the United Arab Emirates, to support bringing its Level 4 robotaxi into commercial service outside China. Chery calls the deal an initial step towards international deployment.
The agreement is due to be signed at the Chery International User Summit in Wuhu, China, which runs from 19 to 23 October. Chery announced the plan on 17 October.
The robotaxi, first shown in April, is built for driverless service at the factory rather than converted from an existing car. Level 4 means a vehicle designed to drive itself without a human taking over, within a defined area. Chery says it uses a six-part safety framework and six-fold redundancy in its control systems.
Chery has not said how many vehicles, which cities or when service would start, and has given few details about K2.
The deal would take a Chinese carmaker’s own purpose-built robotaxi to a Gulf partner, but for now it is a planned framework agreement, not a launch.
