Walmart shoppers around Charlotte, North Carolina, can now have orders delivered by drone, after Wing, the drone company owned by Google’s parent Alphabet, started flights from seven Walmart Supercenters on 21 October.
The stores are in Charlotte, Gastonia, Concord, Kannapolis, Lincolnton, Shelby and Kings Mountain, with two more Charlotte stores due shortly, according to local and trade reports. Customers within about six miles of a participating store can order groceries, household goods and over-the-counter medicines, which Wing says can arrive in as little as 30 minutes. The drone hovers above the garden and lowers the parcel on a tether, so a home needs a clear drop spot about the size of a picnic blanket.
The launch is part of a plan Walmart and Wing announced in January to add drone delivery at 150 more Walmart stores during 2026, reaching about 270 sites by 2027. The FAA completed an environmental review of Wing’s Charlotte operations in April 2025.
Why it matters: neither company has published delivery numbers for Charlotte, so this is a launch rather than a measured result. US drone delivery still runs on individual FAA approvals while a wider rule for flights beyond the pilot’s line of sight, known as Part 108, awaits White House review.
