The UK Ministry of Defence’s Rapid AI Delivery Taskforce and the US Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office will work together on AI and autonomy to protect critical infrastructure, the UK government announced on 22 September during the UN General Assembly.
The announcement came after the UK fired a US torpedo from Excalibur, a 12-metre uncrewed undersea vessel built in Plymouth, in UK waters the week before. Downing Street said it was the first time either country had launched a torpedo from an uncrewed vessel rather than a crewed submarine.
Why it matters: two of NATO’s largest militaries are formally pooling AI and autonomy work at the same time as uncrewed systems reach weapons-firing milestones.
