South Korea shows AI drone swarms in public for the first time on Armed Forces Day

South Korea showed AI-powered drone swarms, multipurpose uncrewed ground vehicles and counter-drone interceptors in public for the first time at its 78th Armed Forces Day in Gyeryong on 1 October, Korea JoongAng Daily reported.

Two Cheongwang laser anti-drone systems also made their first public appearance. About 3,600 personnel and around 70 pieces of equipment took part, according to the Ministry of National Defense.

No figures on how many swarm systems are in service, or how they performed, were given.

Why it matters: putting AI swarms and uncrewed vehicles at the centre of its main military display signals where South Korea’s defence buying is heading.
