Researchers use AI to track side effects of an unapproved weight-loss drug on Reddit

Industry

Researchers at Penn Engineering used large language models to analyse about 150,000 Reddit posts from around 40,000 users discussing retatrutide, a weight-loss drug that is not approved, ScienceDaily reported on 21 October. The study is in JAMA Network Open.

7,823 users described symptoms the model could classify, and increased appetite was the most common. The authors say the findings can only suggest questions for further study.

Why it matters: AI is giving researchers a way to watch for side effects of drugs people take outside the medical system.
