Perplexity released a Windows version of Portable Computer on 14 September, bringing its local agent harness and orchestrator to PCs. The product runs an AI model on the user’s own machine rather than sending work to a server, so a task draws on local hardware instead of subscription credits, and the data involved stays on the device.
The hardware requirement is the part worth reading. It needs an Nvidia GeForce RTX or RTX PRO GPU with at least 24GB of video memory. Nvidia’s account of the release names Qwen3.8 27B as an example of the local model, post-trained to work with Perplexity’s agent and optimised for RTX; support for DGX Station is described as coming. Portable Computer is available to Pro and Max subscribers on individual and enterprise plans, with no separate price published.
The intended work is multi-step and tool-using — the examples offered are reviewing pull requests, working through financial documents and analysing where customers drop out of a funnel. The agent is meant to recognise when a task exceeds what the local model can do and ask permission before sending anything to the cloud.
That 24GB floor is the constraint to watch. It sits above most consumer laptops, which makes this a workstation feature for now rather than a general one.
