OpenAI launches dots, always-on ChatGPT agents with their own computers

OpenAI launched dots on 29 September: agents in ChatGPT that keep working on a person’s behalf when they step away. Each dot runs on GPT‑6 Astra, has its own cloud computer and browser, and can connect to more than 4,000 apps through plugins. People reach it in ChatGPT, Slack or Teams, or by voice call.

Dots are rolling out to Pro and Business Premium subscribers in eligible markets, with a beta that Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare admins can switch on. The first dot is included in those plans; OpenAI says extra dots and capacity will be sold later. It is also piloting “specialist dots” with their own identities and credentials for defined jobs inside companies, and working with Microsoft to manage them through Agent 365.

On safeguards, background work uses read-only tools, a user’s own computer stays separate unless connected, and saved passwords can be used without being shown to the model. Users set rules for what needs approval, some tasks such as changing a password always stay with them, and OpenAI says its monitoring can pause or stop a dot.

Why it matters: ChatGPT moves from a tool you prompt to one that acts between prompts. OpenAI warns that dots “can still make mistakes” and gives no reliability figures.
