The board of Frederick County Public Schools in Maryland voted 6-1 on 7 October to ban student use of AI from pre-K through 12th grade, FOX 5 DC reported.
The district had just begun piloting Google Gemini with middle and high school students. Board members objected that it reached students without notice to parents and that teachers could not switch it off on student devices. The one member who voted against worried older students would be less ready for college.
Lessons about AI and accommodations for students with disabilities are exempt. How the ban will be enforced had not been decided.
Why it matters: a district reversing a big-tech AI rollout within weeks shows school AI policy is swinging toward restriction in parts of the US.
