The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association said on 24 September that hospitals’ use of AI coding tools added an estimated $942m in costs to its plans over two years, Fierce Healthcare reported.
The analysis found the share of inpatient claims coded as medically complex rose from 37% to 40% between 2023 and 2025, with no recorded change in care. It is based on claims data, not medical records, and the American Hospital Association has disputed it.
Why it matters: insurers are now blaming providers’ AI for rising costs, opening a billing dispute between the two sides.
