Anthropic’s revised IPO filing shows nearly $17bn in quarterly revenue and an operating loss

Anthropic has updated its US stock market listing papers with results for the three months to 30 September. The amended S-1, filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on 2 November, reports quarterly revenue of $16.96bn, up from $11.56bn in the previous quarter and $1.38bn a year earlier, a rise the company puts at 1,127%.

The quarter ended in an operating loss of $567m, after operating income of $974m in the quarter before. Anthropic says the swing was mainly driven by $5.0bn of computing power bought under short-term commitments. Its compute and infrastructure costs for the quarter were $9.86bn.

The filing puts Anthropic’s purchase and lease commitments at about $895.4bn, mostly for computing capacity. It still leaves blank the share price range and the number of shares to be sold, so the size and timing of the listing are not yet known.

Why it matters: these are the most detailed numbers yet on what it costs to run a frontier AI lab at this scale. Revenue is growing very fast, but so are the bills for chips and data centres, and the filing shows how much of the company’s future spending is already promised.
