USA Today Co, formerly Gannett, and 13 of its newspapers sued OpenAI in federal court in Manhattan on 8 October, Editor & Publisher reported.
The suit seeks more than $250m in damages and a jury trial, and asks for any model trained on its journalism to be destroyed. It alleges hundreds of thousands of articles were copied from 19 publications. These are allegations; there is no ruling.
Why it matters: one of the largest US local news groups has joined the legal fight over AI training data, with a specific damages figure.
