Pentagon starts work on a proposed command for autonomous warfare

Industry

The US Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, announced plans for a new four-star combatant command for unmanned and autonomous systems in a State of the Force address on 30 September, according to the US Army’s account. He signed a memo the same day launching Project Agincourt to set out the path to the command.

According to reporting on the memo by AeroTime, the target date for setting up the command is 1 October 2027, it depends on legislation from Congress, and a plan of action is due within 30 days. Each military department is to create new specialist roles to support the shift.

If Congress approves it, this would be the first new US combatant command since 2019. The plan comes as UN talks on autonomous weapons reach a review conference in Geneva in November, where states decide whether to begin formal negotiations.
