Atlassian widens its OpenAI deal, with agents to be assigned work in Jira

Atlassian and OpenAI have expanded a partnership that began in 2023. Under it, OpenAI frontier models including the GPT-6 family will power AI agents across Atlassian’s products and its Rovo platform, and Atlassian gains expanded access to new OpenAI models as they are released.

The concrete part concerns Jira. The two companies say they are exploring deeper integrations that would let teams assign work to AI agents and track progress in the same place they track work done by people, and that they will connect ChatGPT and Codex to Atlassian workflows through command-line plugins.

The one figure attached is modest and specific: more than 3,000 Atlassian developers use Codex, across terminals, editors and code review. OpenAI says it continues to use Jira to manage its own internal workflows, which is at least a more interesting endorsement than a quote.

What makes this worth a line is less about either company than about where agents are being placed. A ticket in a project tracker is a unit of accountable work with an owner, a status and a history. Assigning one to an agent puts its output into the process a team already reviews. Most of this is framed as exploration, so there is no shipping date to hold anyone to.
