Brussels names ten finalists for its Apply AI Startup Award

The European Commission confirmed on 2 October the ten finalists for its Apply AI Startup Award, part of the Apply AI strategy aimed at getting European firms to deploy AI rather than merely build it. The named finalists are AID, Better Medicine, blueOASIS, DAITABLE, Flinn, Prewave, ReportAId, Seedsight, TrollWall AI and Zortify.

The award is organised by the Commission’s directorate-general for communications networks, content and technology, and spans sectors it lists as healthcare, manufacturing, energy, electronic communication and defence. A jury will select three winners, who pitch on 20 October and receive their awards on the main stage of the Apply AI Summit on 17 November.

This is a shortlist rather than a result, and the announcement states no cash prize, so the value to the companies involved is visibility and a summit slot. It is worth noting mainly as a read on what Brussels currently wants to hold up as European AI deployment: the list leans towards supply-chain risk, medical imaging and content moderation rather than foundation models.

Why it matters: the Apply AI strategy is the deployment-side counterpart to the AI Act, and the 17 November summit is the date to watch for whatever policy follows it.
