The Comptroller and Auditor General of India and the Digital India Bhashini Division have launched CAG-Bhashini Anuvaad, an AI translation service for the auditor’s official documents and audit reports. It was launched at the CAG’s office in New Delhi on 30 September, at the closing of Hindi Fortnight 2026.
Bhashini is the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s national language platform, built to give Indian government services translation and speech capability across Indian languages. The release describes the CAG deployment as an AI-enabled environment for translating official documents that also meets the institution’s requirements on security, controlled access and data sovereignty, the last point being much of the reason a national auditor would use a state platform rather than a commercial translation service. Customised handling of audit terminology and human review of the output are part of the design.
Audit reports are among the documents Indian citizens are most entitled to read and least able to, because they are written in English and in specialist language. Machine translation into Indian languages is a plausible remedy, and the CAG is a prominent early adopter inside government.
