OpenAI has published usage figures for ChatGPT for Teens, the experience applied by default to accounts it identifies as under 18, and announced a College Planner feature for American high-school students.
The numbers are OpenAI’s own and mostly arranged to reassure. Teens spend under 15 minutes a day on average, set against what OpenAI cites as a publicly reported average of 5 hours for teen social media use. Fewer than 2% spend more than three consecutive hours, and of those, more than 80% had at least one learning-related prompt.
On learning, OpenAI reports that teens given access sent about 2.7 million more learning-related messages, that nearly 1.2 million used Learning Visualizations in one week and more than 180,000 used Study Mode. It also says that in almost half of teen conversations carrying a break reminder, the teen took a break or ended the conversation within five minutes. None of this has been checked outside the company.
College Planner has not shipped. When it does it covers grades 10 to 12 in the United States, aimed at four-year colleges, tracking aid deadlines and scholarships, with other college types and countries later. OpenAI is also funding a three-year advisory lab with Boston Children’s Hospital, around 22 students for 2026-27, and says it will report back on what it changes and why.
